In the heart of Bahrain, a nation celebrated for its religious landscape of Muslim, Jewish, Hindu and various Christian communities, the commitment to peaceful coexistence and human fraternity has long been a fabric of society. Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been coming to work and live in the Kingdom of Bahrain for over 50 years and have enjoyed the privilege of gathering and worshiping in Manama.
On Monday, May 6, 2024, Elder Anthony D. Perkins, President of the Middle East/Africa North Area of the Church, accompanied by his wife, Christine, visited Bahrain to meet with His Excellency Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs, who also serves as chair of the Board of Trustees of the King Hamad Global Center for Peaceful Coexistence.
During the meeting, various regional interfaith projects and initiatives were discussed. His Excellency Al Khalifa underscored the common values shared between the country of Bahrain and the Church, and encouraged further mutual projects to promote these principles.
Elder Perkins praised Bahrain’s efforts in promoting a culture of tolerance and appreciation for religious pluralism in the region. “It was great to be in Bahrain and to learn of its history, culture and vision. The efforts of the King Hamad Center show the commitment to a true spirit of interfaith understanding,” he said while reflecting on his trip.
The King Hamad Global Center for Peaceful Coexistence was established to advance the vision of fostering global peace and understanding. The center hosts interfaith dialogue events, cultural exhibitions, and educational programs that aim to promote mutual respect and understanding.
Elder and Sister Perkins concluded their visit to Bahrain by meeting with the members of the Church. They shared messages about the importance of faith in Jesus Christ and the role of the Church leaders. Elder Perkins also spent time answering questions from local members.
The Church of Jesus Christ is actively engaged in interreligious dialogue throughout the region, seeking to support worthy initiatives aimed at promoting peace and mutual understanding across faith traditions.
